Scope and Content Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian, from west Gowanbank, near Linlithgow, was the country home of Sir James Gowans (1821-90), a prominent Scottish architect, railway engineer, quarry manager and politician. He redesigned the house and steading in the mid-19th century in his own highly individual, ornate, Gothic-inspired style. This shows part of the steading which lies downhill from the house. Some of the steading buildings date from the 1820s but these chimneys-stacks are characteristic of Gowans' mid-19th-century design, their elaborate masonry work topped with castellated chimney pots. In 1846 Gowans began to concentrate his energies on the newly developing railway network. As a railway engineer he built lines joining Edinburgh to nearby towns like Bathgate and North Berwick, then moved to the Highlands where he constructed the Dunkeld to Ballinluig and Dalwhinnie to Boat o' Garten lines.
