Scope and Content Part of steading from south, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian Gowanbank, some 9.6km south-west of Linlithgow, was the country home of Sir James Gowans (1821-90), a prominent Scottish architect, quarry manager, railway engineer and politician. Gowanbank is one of the finest examples of his highly individual, idiosyncratic, Gothic-style architecture still existing in Scotland. This shows a farm labourers' cottage built by Gowans in 1862. The tall chimney-stack, with its colourful, decorative masonry work and castellated chimney pots on top is typical of Gowans' ornate style. The flat-roofed brick and cement extension was added in the 20th century. Throughout his career, Gowans strove to improve the conditions of working class housing. In 1886, as Chairman of an International Exhibition in Edinburgh, Gowans won a prize for designing a model working man's house in which he combined spaciousness with good ventilation, sanitation and drainage.
