Scope and Content Part of steading from north, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian Gowanbank, near Linlithgow, was the country home of Sir James Gowans (1821-90), a prominent Scottish architect, quarry manager and railway engineer. Inheriting the farm from his father, Gowans enlarged it in the mid-19th century, transforming it into a highly individual, Gothic-style country home. This shows part of the steading with characteristic, decorated, masonry chimney-stacks and castellated chimney pots on top. The walls are also decorated with an intricate pattern of masonry using local stone which was readily available, inexpensive and harmonised well with the landscape. Both Sir James Gowans and Frederick T Pilkington were popular, highly respected architects in Victorian Edinburgh. Unfortunately, their work has not withstood the test of time as well as that of their better known, Glaswegian contemporaries, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Alexander 'Greek' Thomson.
