Scope and Content Interior of byre from south showing carriage house arches, Home Farm, Gordon Castle, Moray The Home Farm of Gordon Castle lies near Fochabers on the road between Inverness and Aberdeen. This elegant Georgian steading was built as part of a massive programme of alterations and additions to the castle undertaken by John Baxter for the 4th Duke of Gordon between 1769 and 1783. This shows the interior of the steading, now a cow byre, but formerly used to house the duke's stables and carriage house, as the carriage arches show. The architectural style of the steading, topped with battlements, matches that of the castle nearby and belies the practical function of these buildings. John Baxter transformed Gordon Castle into a palace in keeping with the duke's status. Its northern façade measured 173m and comprised a central tower with matching, two-storeyed east and west wings. It was richly furnished inside and was surrounded by extensive, well-tended parklands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
