Scope and Content Interior of byre, Home Farm, Gordon Castle, Moray, from east The Home Farm of Gordon Castle, near Fochabers, was designed and built by John Baxter, an Edinburgh architect. It was part of a massive programme of reconstruction which transformed the old castle, beside the River Spey, into the elegant palace desired by the 4th Duke of Gordon. This shows the steading which housed the duke's former stables and coach house. The hollow square round which the steading was built has been roofed over and the interior adapted for use as a cattle byre. The exterior design of these elegant, Georgian buildings mirrors that of the castle nearby. 18th-century agricultural improvement transformed Scottish farming. One consequence was the development of better methods of animal husbandry and the introduction of superior breeds of cattle, such as Ayrshire and Aberdeen Angus, which went on to achieve world renown.
