Scope and Content West block, Home Farm, Gordon Castle, Moray, from north-east Gordon Castle Home Farm, near Fochabers, was built for the 4th Duke of Gordon as part of a major programme of building which transformed Castle Gordon into a palace. Abraham Roumieu's original designs were altered by John Baxter of Edinburgh, who worked on the castle from 1769 to 1783. This shows the elaborate architectural style used for this steading, built to mirror the design of the castle nearby. They have the same battlements round the top and elegant windows below, and present a dignified image in keeping with the Georgian elegance of the Duke's redesigned country seat. In the 18th century, agricultural improvement, which combined a more commercial and scientific approach to farming, revolutionised the design of farm buildings. Those who could afford it, like the Dukes of Gordon, employed architects to build model farm buildings blending industrial practicality with scientific theory and art.
