Scope and Content Eaves detail, Corseyard Farm, Dumfries & Galloway Corseyard Farm is a remarkable, early 20th-century, model dairy unit on Knockbrex estate, 8.8km south of Gatehouse of Fleet. These elaborate farm steadings were built for James Brown, a wealthy businessman from Manchester, who bought the estate in 1895 for his retirement. This shows a section of the roof with arched dormer window, now boarded up, red asbestos tiles laid in a diamond pattern. Below are two rows of decorative salt-glazed pantiles set in mortar above the eaves. At the corner is a ball finial, a formal ornament shaped like a ball on a square plinth. The design of this elaborately decorated steading has elements of the Arts and Crafts Movement, popular from 1860 to 1925, and Art Nouveau in vogue from 1888 to 1905, which grew from it. Art Nouveau took its name from a Parisian shop specialising in items of modern design rather than copies of previous styles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
