Scope and Content Tangy Mill and the Tangy Burn from east, Argyll and Bute Tangy Mill was built in the early 19th century next to the Tangy Burn. A small dam at the head of a waterfall leads the water to a high breastshot waterwheel (water hits the top of the wheel and turns it back on itself). The mill was used to grind oats for both human and animal foods. It closed in 1961 and was converted into a dwelling in 1983. This shows the slate-roofed, rubble-built mill with its three storeys containing top, middle and bottom 'lofts' (right) and a drying kiln with conical ventilator (left). The eight spoke mill-wheel is made from wood and iron and measures 1.25m wide by 5.44m in diameter. The dam and sluice which lets water build up behind the waterwheel can be seen in the foreground. The lower loft contained the gear cupboard which transferred the power of the waterwheel to other parts of the mill, the middle loft contained the two pairs of millstones which ground the oats, and access through to the drying floor of the kiln (where oats were dried before milling) and the top floor contained the hoppers for the millstones, storage space for sacks of oats, and the sack hoist.
