Scope and Content Middle loft, Tangy Mill, Argyll & Bute Tangy Mill was built in the early 19th century next to the Tangy Burn. A small dam at the head of a waterfall leads the water to a high breastshot waterwheel (water hits the top of the wheel and turns it back on itself). The mill was used to grind oats for both human and animal foods. It closed in 1961 and was converted into a dwelling in 1983. This shows the middle loft of the mill which houses the millstones. These are contained within wooden surrounds called 'hupes'. Above each stone is the 'horse', a wooden frame which carried the hopper. Oats were fed down into the stones by a wooden tray kept moving by a 'tickler' attached to the spindle. On the left is a millstone lifting crane. The arm of the crane was swung over the stones, and the hanging hooks placed into holes in the side of the stone. The screw on top of the crane was tightened, and the stone would lift allowing the millstone dresser to re-cut the stone when it had worn down. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
