Scope and Content Winnowing machine and pease griddle, New Barony Corn Mill, Boardhouse Mills, Birsay, Orkney Islands Boardhouse Mills consists of New Barony Corn Mill, Old Barony Corn Mill and Boardhouse Threshing Mill. The main block, New Barony Corn Mill, was built in 1873, but milling had taken place on this site for many years previous to this. The mill contains three pairs of millstones powered by a 4.3m-diameter overshot waterwheel (water hits the wheel at the top). This shows the winnowing machine (left), which separates the inner part of the grain from the chaff, and which is driven by belt drives from the waterwheel. On the right is a pease griddle installed and made in the early 1980s. This electrically-heated machine with its rotating stirring arm dries pease for use in meal. Pease (dried peas) are traditionally made into a filling dish called pease pudding, containing a puree of soaked, dried peas flavoured with ham and boiled in a pudding cloth. The dish features in the nursery rhyme: 'Pease pudding hot/pease pudding cold/pease pudding in the pot/nine days old'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
