Scope and Content Kiln firebox, New Barony Corn Mill, Boardhouse Mills, Birsay, Orkney Islands Boardhouse Mills consists of New Barony Corn Mill, Old Barony Corn Mill and Boardhouse Threshing Mill. The main block, New Barony Corn Mill, was built in 1873, but milling has taken place on this site for many years previous to this. The mill contains three pairs of millstones powered by a 4.3m-diameter overshot waterwheel (water hits the wheel at the top). This shows the arched firebox situated below the drying kiln. The kiln is fuelled by smokeless anthracite or coke, or by the dry husks which are a by-product of the milling process. The miller would traditionally be allowed to retain husks from the grain he milled as fuel. Oats and other grains need to be dried in a kiln before they are ground, as excess moisture in the grains produces a sticky paste which in extreme cases must be cleaned from the millstones by hand. The surface of a millstone is dressed with a pattern of grooves which are set to either crush or separate the husk and inner, floury parts of the grain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
