Scope and Content Photographic copy of section of tower and plans of floors, Bound Skerry Lighthouse, Out Skerries, Shetland Islands This section drawing shows the various floors of the lighthouse, with the lightroom at the top, the bedroom and kitchen in the middle part of the tower, and the dry store, coal store, water store and oil store on the lower floors for ease of unloading from boats. To the right of the section drawing are plans of all the floors, showing supporting beams and fittings. Bound Skerry Lighthouse is 30m tall, and stands 44m above the level of mean high water on its island base. Bound Skerry island is 32km north-east of Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. Keeper's accommodation was provided within the tower itself, with a relief station on the nearby island of Grunay. Bound Skerry Lighthouse was built 1856-8 to designs by engineers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87). It stands seven storeys high, and its light flashes white every 20 seconds, with a range of 32km. The lighthouse replaced a temporary light on Grunay island which was placed there in 1854. Bound Skerry Lighthouse was automated in 1972, and is now monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board's headquarters in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
