Scope and Content Photographic copy of plan of old and new lighthouse sites, Bound Skerry Lighthouse, Out Skerries, Shetland Islands This shows a plan of Grunay island (left) and Bound Skerry island (right). The dashed red line on Grunay (left) represents the road from the landing place to the temporary light and dwelling houses. The red line on Bound Skerry Island (right) shows the proposed landing place and new lighthouse site. A temporary lighthouse was established on Grunay on 15 September 1854, and this was replaced by the new lighthouse on Bound Skerry in 1858. The new structure is 30m tall, and stands 44m above the level of mean high water. Keepers' accommodation remained in use on Grunay, and suffered an attack by a German bomber on 18th January 1942, killing a boatman's mother, destroying the boatman's house and coal store, and badly damaging the flagpole (used for signalling), other dwelling houses and outbuildings. Bound Skerry Lighthouse was built 1856-8 to designs by engineers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87). It stands seven storeys high, and its light flashes white every 20 seconds, with a range of 32km. The lighthouse replaced a temporary light on Grunay island which was placed there in 1854. Bound Skerry Lighthouse was automated in 1972, and is now monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board's headquarters in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
