Scope and Content Photographic copy of design for service bracket, Bound Skerry Lighthouse, Out Skerries, Shetland Island This shows an elevation, plan and detail of a metal bracket to be placed about halfway up the exterior of the lighthouse. A rope and pulleys would be fixed to the hooked arm, which would then be used to haul up barrels of water and other deliveries into the doorway below. Getting supplies to lighthouse keepers was an important and often difficult job. They needed fresh water, fuel, food and medical supplies, and often had to wait for deliveries due to bad weather. If the supply boat could not approach the landing stage, then ropes could be slung across the water to attempt a delivery. Bound Skerry Lighthouse was built 1856-8 to designs by engineers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87). It stands seven storeys high, and its light flashes white every 20 seconds, with a range of 32km. The lighthouse replaced a temporary light on Grunay island which was placed there in 1854. Bound Skerry Lighthouse was automated in 1972, and is now monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board's headquarters in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
