Scope and Content Spirit safe in still house from north-west, Pittyvaich Distillery, Dufftown, Moray Pittyvaich Distillery was built in 1975 by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd next to its sister distillery, Dufftown. The malt whisky produced here was first released onto the market in 1991, and also used in Bell's blends. After being mothballed in 1993, a trial run of gin production was attempted in 1994. The site is now used for testing new barleys. This shows a brass spirit safe which is used to monitor and divert the flow of whisky to be redistilled, or send it to the spirit vat for cask filling and maturation. The safe is locked with Customs and Excise Crown padlocks to protect the valuable and taxable contents within. The wrought-iron balustrade adds a touch of ornamentation to the otherwise functional modern interior. The stills fitted at Pittyvaich are identical to those fitted in Dufftown distillery, and the whisky produced at both sites was matured in shared facilities. Despite these similarities in production, the two matured whiskies differ in taste. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
