Scope and Content Settling tanks in bio-plant from west, Pittyvaich Distillery, Dufftown, Moray Pittyvaich Distillery was built in 1975 by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd next to its sister distillery, Dufftown. The malt whisky produced here was first released onto the market in 1991, and also used in Bell's blends. After being mothballed in 1993, a trial run of gin production was attempted in 1994. The site is now used for testing new barleys. This shows a settling tank in the bio-plant next to the distillery. Effluent (liquid waste) from the distillery is sent for processing here before it is released back into the burn from which the distillery takes its water. Distilleries are now subject to controls which limit the amount of pollutants they may legally be allowed to pump back into the burns and springs from which they draw their water. Monitoring of the effects pollution has upon aquatic and marine life has led to tighter controls upon the disposal of effluent from many industries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
