Scope and Content Byre and stable, Wester Kittochside Farm, South Lanarkshire, from east Wester Kittochside Farm is a rare example of a farm whose buildings span three centuries of agricultural change from the late 18th-century improvement period to modern times. Recent developments, however, have hardly touched it and the farm, gifted to The National Trust for Scotland in 1992 and now supporting the Museum of Scottish Country Life, is rare in having such intact examples of original buildings. This view looking from the east shows the byre and stable attached to the north elevation of the farmhouse (left). Note the gig shed attached to the stable end and, to the far right, is the threshing barn. The house would always have been slated, but the steading buildings were probably originally thatched. They were mainly of limewashed rubble masonry. Horses were particularly important to the 6th laird of the farm because of his quarrying and lime-burning activities. The stable has boulder footings and contains stalls for three horses and a loose box with a loft above. The small byre was re-roofed and upgraded in the mid-19th century and early 20th century and housed up to six dry cows or calves. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
