Scope and Content Hole Flint Mill, Fife, from east Flint was an important part of the ceramic industry in Kirkcaldy where there were four potteries. Hole Mill was one of two in the area which catered for this need. Converted from an 18th-century corn mill, it became a flint mill in about 1860 and continued into the 20th century in that role. Nearby are the ruins of two calcining kilns. This is a general view of the site looking east, with the mill on the right of the large retaining wall. The buildings are of rubble with brick extensions and generally have pantile roofs. The kiln is visible behind the cottage, a very similar construction to a lime kiln. It is 5.8m high and built into the hillside. Hole Flint Mill was 50m upstream of Balwearie Flint Mill and was a bigger, more modern complex. To power its waterwheel, a masonry weir directed water into a wooden lade (headrace) built on to the valley side and supported from below by cast-iron pillars. Waste products were used to increase the area of flat ground. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
