Scope and Content Ruined Chapel, Kirkapol, Tiree, Argyll & Bute The roofless ruin of a chapel, dating possibly from the latter half of the 14th century, stands at Kirkapol on the east coast of Tiree, looking across the fine sweep of sand of Traigh Mhor to Gott Bay. The building was photographed by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge c.1898. The chapel, a small single-chambered oblong building, stands on the uneven surface of natural rock surrounded by the flat machair, the calcareous plain of grass and wild flowers that covers most of the island. Only the rough rubble gable-ends and north side wall of the building still stand to their original height. The absence of architectural mouldings and ornaments makes it difficult to give a precise date to the surviving remains of the chapel, but it probably dates from the late Middle Ages, possibly the latter half of the 14th century. It has no recorded history, and the dedication is unknown. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
