Scope and Content Wattled panel, Barn, Mains of Applecross Farm, Applecross, Highland Mains of Applecross Farm is a late 18th- to mid-19th-century steading with three notable vernacular barns incorporating wattle and heather thatch and showing strong Hebridean influences in their walling. The steading was formerly called Borrodale and is situated close to the mid-18th-century Applecross House, built for the Mackenzies of Applecross. This is a detail of a wattled panel in the east wall of the 'crac' barn showing hazel woven like wicker through slats of wood. The louvred openings on the front wall and wattled openings at the back provide good drying conditions for hay and corn. Drying racks flank each of these vents inside the barn. The barn has a wide segmental-headed entrance in its east gable with double slatted doors and blacksmith's hinges to all the gates. The roof is now corrugated iron, piended at the east gable. The second bay from the west on the south side has double winnowing doors. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
