Scope and Content Heather-thatched Barn, Mains of Applecross Farm, Applecross, Highland, from south-east Mains of Applecross Farm is a late 18th- to mid-19th-century steading with three notable vernacular barns incorporating wattle and heather thatch and showing strong Hebridean influences in their walling. The steading was formerly called Borrodale and is situated close to the mid-18th-century Applecross House, built for the Mackenzies of Applecross. This shows the southern barn, viewed from the south-east, which still had a heather-thatched roof. Both barns are made of coursed drystone, square rubble with central winnowing doorways and piended roofs. The low walls show a good deal of battering from the elements and the wide wall vents are filled with rough vertical half-cut staves, replacing former wattling. The heavy thatched roofs were borne by pairs of wooden crucks (couples) standing on the cills of the wide vents. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
