Scope and Content Cart shed, East Barns Farm, Dunbar, East Lothian, from north-north-east Dated 1847, East Barns Farm was the property of the Hay family in the 19th century and includes a cart shed, granary and chimney-stack arranged in a line running north-east. The buildings are of random rubble with droved grey ashlar dressings with polished borders, grey slate roofs and lead flashings. This is the cart shed viewed from north-north-east showing its eleven segmental archways with the pend, the main entrance into the courtyard on the left. The arches have chamfered arrises (angles) to the dividing piers which have broached (split) and droved voussoirs (wedge shaped stones) over the bays. Note the louvred (slatted) windows of the first-floor granary above the cart shed, designed to maximise air flow for drying. The west elevation of the range is blank at ground level with similarly detailed granary openings above. The whole has a 'piend', or hipped, roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
