Scope and Content Aerial view of Dens Park and Tannadice Park, Tannadice Street, Dundee In 1909, the Irish community in Dundee formed a new football club, Dundee Hibernian, following the demise of Dundee Harp three years earlier. Renamed Dundee United Football Club in 1923, the Club was based at Clepington Park, now Tannadice Park. City rivals Dundee Football Club was formed in 1893 as a result of an amalgamation of Our Boys and East End. Dundee FC moved to Dens Park in 1898/9. This aerial view from the west shows Dens Park, the home ground of Dundee FC, which was opened in 1899, in the foreground, and Tannadice Park behind, before extensive development work was carried out in the 1990s. It is unusual to have two major football grounds so close together. In Britain, only Liverpool and Everton maintain a similar proximity. On 21 August 1909 Dundee United (then Dundee Hibs) had their first ever competitive match. It was against Dundee Wanderers, previous occupants of Tannadice Park, and the Wanderers won 2-1. Tannadice was the scene for Dundee Hibs' debut in the Scottish League, and although opponents Leith Athletic won 3-2, Dundee Hibs quickly earned a reputation as cup fighters and on 25 March 1911 won the Forfarshire Cup.
