Scope and Content Byre, barn and cart shed, Kilchiaran Farm, Kilchiaran, Islay, Argyll & Bute The house and steading of Kilchiaran date from 1826 when a new farm with an Ayrshire tenant was established following the clearance of the old township of Kilchiaran. Its most distinctive feature is a semicircular inner cattle court about 58m in diameter. This shows the byre, barn and cart shed from the south. It is likely that the granary was above the cart shed. A granary was intended to store threshed rather than milled grain and it was believed that movement of air below the floor would help to keep the grain sweet. By 1811 mills had found their way to the larger farms on the Hebridean islands of Islay, Colonsay, Gigha, Skye and others. The cultivation of sown grasses for hay reached Islay surprisingly early, in 1761, while it did not happen in mainland Sutherland until the 1770s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
