Scope and Content Waterwheel and sluice gate, Kilchiaran Farm, Kilchiaran, Islay, Argyll & Bute The house and steading of Kilchiaran date from 1826 when a new farm with an Ayrshire tenant was established following the clearance of the old township of Kilchiaran. Its most distinctive feature is a semicircular inner cattle-court about 58 metres in diameter. This is the threshing barn and adjacent byre building from the south-east, showing the waterwheel, which drove the threshing machine, attached to the barn wall and the sluice gate (right) which controls the flow of water to a short stone-lined lade from the nearby mill pond. The single-storeyed east limb of this north range contains a dairy, byre and turnip shed. The barn is at the centre of the north range and has an enlarged central doorway and flanking slit windows. Inside is a threshing mill made by J Drummond of Cumnock which was formerly driven by the waterwheel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
