Scope and Content Duty free warehouse from south-west, Knockando Distillery, Moray Knockando Distillery was founded in 1898 by the Knockando-Glenlivet Distillery Company but closed 1900-4. The floor maltings were discontinued in 1968, and the works were renovated in 1969, when the number of stills was increased from two to four. Distillate for blending is matured elsewhere, but Knockando single malt is matured on the premises. This shows the interior of a duty free warehouse where casks of whisky are stored until they have matured to the required colour and complex taste. Some of the casks on the right hand side have signatures on their lids, which means that groups of investors have bought the cask and will own the contents once mature. Whisky is stored in bonded (locked) warehouses until it has matured. This must be over three years, but many casks are left for up to 20 years. During this time, about 2% of the alcohol in a barrel is lost through evaporation each year, a loss which is known as 'the angel's share'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
