Scope and Content Pittyvaich Distillery from south-east, Dufftown, Moray Pittyvaich Distillery was built in 1975 by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd next to its sister distillery, Dufftown. The malt whisky produced here was first released onto the market in 1991, and also used in Bell's blends. After being mothballed in 1993, a trial run of gin production was attempted in 1994. The site is now used for testing new barleys. This shows the modern still house building, with its sloping roof and feature window revealing the copper stills within. The buildings behind contain the mill, mashing and fermenting facilities. The walls are harled or clad in corrugated metal sheets. The unadorned, functional appearance of Pittyvaich is typical of most modern distilleries. It is very different to the traditional image promoted by the older distilleries, with their pagoda vents, malt kilns and warm stonework. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
