Scope and Content Console in still house, Pittyvaich Distillery, Dufftown, Moray Pittyvaich Distillery was built in 1975 by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd next to its sister distillery, Dufftown. The malt whisky produced here was first released onto the market in 1991, and also used in Bell's blends. After being mothballed in 1993, a trial run of gin production was attempted in 1994. The site is now used for testing new barleys. This panel is set into a desk in the still room, where wash from fermented barley and water is heated until the alcohol rises as vapour within copper stills, and is condensed into spirit. The display shows a flow diagram of the entire process, and is set with red and green indicator lights for monitoring the system. Computerised systems and modern production equipment have been installed in many distilleries. Many are now run with a fraction of the workforce previously required to maintain and monitor each process, leading to many redundancies and some staff houses being sold off for holiday homes.
