Scope and Content Interior of engine house, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from north Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows the interior of the engine or boiler house from the north. Power was produced by burning coal to produce steam and the building was serviced by a tall chimney. The high domed silage storage tanks at Sibster are amongst the farm's 20th-century developments. Scottish inventors have always been on the cutting edge of agricultural development. In the 1760s James Small of Blackadder Mount, Berwickshire, designed the modern plough with a curved mould board to turn over the furrows and Patrick Bell invented the world's first reaping machine in 1828.
