Scope and Content Cart shed, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from north-east Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows the cart shed from the north-east of the courtyard with six segmental-headed arched openings where carts and other machinery would have been stored. It was reckoned that one cart was needed per 50-70 acres of farmland to transport produce to and from the fields. In Caithness and Orkney flagstone was used for walls and roofs, stable divisions and fences. In the latter case single flagstones are pressed narrow end into the ground side by side to form a barrier. This is very characteristic of the rural landscape of Caithness.
