Scope and Content Detail of bowl above hearth in kiln, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows the bowl above the hearth inside the kiln where the corn was put to dry. Into this chamber the heat from the fire was carried by a straight or curving flue. The floors of round kilns could be as much as 2.4m in diameter. A circular kiln similar to the Scottish examples was excavated in Iceland and dated to 1342 when the farm was overwhelmed by a volcanic eruption. There is also a 14th-century example, built like a corner turret, in the medieval farm of Jarlshof in south Shetland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
