Scope and Content Kiln and granary, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south-west Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows the kiln and granary from the south-west with a farm workers' cottage in the background. The kiln rises above the ridge of the granary roof and is a tapering rubble inverted cone terminating with a circular apex vent. The adjacent first-floor granary was ventilated by the louvred openings visible here. In the moist climate of Scotland grain has to be dried before it is ground, otherwise the kernels will not granulate easily. This was especially true of oats. Drying was less necessary for the harder grains of bere and barley although when it was being malted for ale, bere had to be kiln-dried to stop the growth of the shoots.
