Scope and Content Photographic copy of section, plans and elevations of tower, Rubha Nan Gall, Mull, Argyll & Bute This shows a section (left) through the tower showing the stone spiral stair up to the first-floor oil store, and the ladders which lead to the dry store and lightroom. The elevation (centre) shows the lighthouse with its high doorway, stone base and corbelled area below the lantern. The details on the right show a plan of the corbels and a detail of the parapet door. Stone for building Rubha Nan Gall (which means 'Stranger's Point') was quarried from a site above nearby Bloody Bay. Blocks were transported down to the beach and around the coast by boat to the rock where the tower and dwelling houses were being constructed. Rubha Nan Gall Lighthouse, situated on its rocky outcrop close to Tobermory overlooking the Sound of Mull, was built in 1857 to designs by engineers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87). It is a small brick tower reached by an iron bridge from the mainland shore station. The light was converted to gas power in 1895 and automated in 1960. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
