Scope and Content Cart shed, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south-east Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This is the rear of the cart shed from the south-east showing damage at the southern end (right). It was often the case that the granary was situated above the cart shed to allow the movement of air below the floor and reduce the risk of rats spoiling the produce. Caithness flagstones are the traditional paving of Scotland, gracing the courtyards and kitchens of many ancient castles and mansions. They pave Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and Edinburgh's New Town. Caithness stone is most commonly a soft grey colour but it also varies from buff/grey through to near jet-black.
