Scope and Content West range of steading, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south-west Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This shows the west range of the steading from the south-west stepped down the slope. The long barn with the vast double doors may have been a byre, while to the right is the rear of the cart shed range. At the end of the west range the conical roof of the kiln is just visible. A plan of 1836 shows a scheme for laying out 19 small farms at Sibster across an area of 850 acres and several Caithness estate plans dating from this period show new farms being created. The result was that by 1840 no undivided common remained in Thurso and waste was being reclaimed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
