Scope and Content Farm workers' cottage, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This farm workers' cottage, seen here from the south, would have originally been roofed with local slate at one time but has been replaced by corrugated metal, with two small skylights lighting the attic space. Like the rest of the Sibster buildings it is neatly built of coursed local rubble masonry. In Caithness, in the early 1800s, it could be said that the upper classes ate as in south Scotland except that oat meal or barley meal cakes were used in place of wheaten bread. However by 1812 there were two bakers in Thurso and one in Wick, who had started to import flour from elsewhere. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
