Scope and Content Farmhouse, Sibster Mains Farm, Highland, from south Sibster Mains Farm has a large steading arranged around a square courtyard, dating variously from the late 18th century to the mid- to late 19th century and into the 20th century. It is thus a fine example of agricultural development through three centuries and is particularly notable for its 18th-century kiln barn. This is the farmhouse viewed from the south, showing the main entrance with an enclosed porch, essential for the harsh Caithness climate. The house, probably dating from the early 19th century, is an elegant L-plan, harled with long and short rusticated quoins (corner stones). It also has crowstepped gables and dormers. The house is a prime example of the period of 'Improvement' which was sweeping across Scotland from the late 18th century. The 1830s was a busy time in Caithness when land was reclaimed and reorganised and a 'five-course shift' (rotating five different crops in a field year to year) was adopted to maintain soil condition. Along with these improvements came greater prosperity and more impressive farm buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
