Scope and Content Grain loft, Guisachan, Highland, from west Dating from 1860, this huge courtyard steading was designed by A & W Reid & Mackenzie for Lord Tweedmouth who bought Guisachan estate from William Fraser of Culbokie in 1854. Guisachan House is now a ruin, but the farm, which includes a picturesque dairy, and the model village of Tomich, are still standing. This view shows the inside of the grain loft from the west. Grain would be stored here to dry prior to threshing. The louvred windows helped ventilate the loft and assist the drying process. The space has now been converted to holiday accommodation and windows have been put into the roof. In 1854 there were 230 people living on the estate which according to Lord Tweedmouth rose to '240 not including those in the mansion house.' More recently, around 200 guests can be accommodated during the tourist season since the steading and associated buildings were converted to holiday accommodation. The lochs above the farm steading are particularly popular for fishing brown trout. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
