Scope and Content Sheep fold and dipping shed, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland, from south-east Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This is a view of the sheep fold and covered dipping shed from the south-east. The sheep fold has a concrete and flagstone floor and wooden boundary fences, and would have been used to gather and control sheep during dipping. Farmers have dipped sheep for many centuries, but smearing is now a thing of the past where sheep were coated with a mixture of tar and antiseptics, not only to prevent disease, but to waterproof them. Streams were widened to make sheep washes to wash out the mixture prior to shearing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
