Scope and Content Covered dipping shed, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This shows the south elevation of the covered dipping shed. Covered dipping sheds were a feature of the Sutherland estate, the finest example being at Melness sheep farm, then the largest farm in the UK. Most sheep would have been of the Blackface breed. The Earldom of Sutherland was created in 1235, and a castle appears to have stood on this site since then. Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860) was retained in 1845 to completely re-model Dunrobin Castle, to change it from a fort to a house in the Scots Baronial style so popular among the aristocracy. There are 189 rooms in Dunrobin, making it the largest house in the northern Highlands. Barry was the architect for the House of Commons in London and was much in demand.
