Scope and Content Drinking trough beside sheep dip shed, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This shows the flagstone drinking trough next to the covered dipping shed. It is 2.5m long, 0.3m deep and 0.65m wide at the top. Behind can be seen the rubble masonry walls of the dipping shed and the edge of its corrugated sheet metal roof. The dipping shed is in front of the south elevation of the steading. Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860), who designed the steading, was also the architect of the Houses of Parliament in London. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
