Scope and Content Courtyard at steading, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This view is looking across the courtyard from the north-east corner. Next to the pend and carriage house (left) is the two-storeyed stable with loft above, and byre, which is single-storeyed and contains three double stalls and a calf pen. The pend and the stable both have crowstepped gables topped by pyramidal finials. Whilst the traditional breed of black cattle remained important on the estate, a 'Dunrobin breed, originally from Argylshire', was developed, which sold for a lot more than the local cattle. Black-polled, or hornless, Galloway were kept at Kirkton Farm and won prizes for their breeder at all the local shows. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
