Scope and Content Door in south elevation of steading, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This is a detail of a door on the east side of the carriage bays in the south elevation of the steading. The door is set into a semicircular-arched lobby and leads to the feed room, originally used as a stable with traces of the fittings showing it had three stalls. Note the window with the diamond pattern cast iron frame. One of the most valuable collections of documents at the Sutherland estate office in Golspie is a large number of farm specifications dating from the 1850s. The detailed descriptions help in the identification of their former function. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
