Scope and Content Datestone and dovecot on south elevation of steading, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This is a detail of the datestone and dovecot within the crowstepped gable above the pend in the south elevation. The stone displays the intertwining 'S S' monogram, for the Sutherland and Stafford families, surmounted by the Sutherland ducal coronet, and underneath this is the date of the building, 1843. Pigeons were a staple part of the diet in many parts of the UK when the steading was built. The loft is above a cobbled floor in the pend and the loft floor is wooden, replaced in the early 1990s. The only other steading on the estate with ornate crowsteps as seen at Tongue Mains is at Skelbo. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
