Scope and Content Steading, Tongue Mains Farm, Highland, from south-east Tongue Mains steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3 million acres, more than 90% of the county. It was built in 1843 to a design by Sir Charles Barry adapted by Alexander Coupar and was intended for use with the nearby Tongue House. This shows the south elevation from the south-east, with the corrugated sheet metal-covered dipping shed in the foreground. This imposing courtyard steading is roofed with silvery-grey Melness slates from quarries at Talmine on the west side of Tongue Bay. It has a central arched entrance with a crowstepped gable containing a dovecot. The House of Tongue is dated 1678 and 1750 and was the northern residence of the Sutherland family when they were not at Dunrobin Castle. Along with Skelbo Farm further south, Tongue Mains was completely rebuilt for members of the Leveson-Gower family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
