Scope and Content Aerial view, Celtic Park Stadium (Parkhead), No 95 Kerrydale Street, Glasgow On 6 November 1887, Celtic Football Club was formally constituted to alleviate poverty in Glasgow's East End parishes. Their first playing ground was at Springfield Road about 200m from the present site which they came to in 1892. Redevelopment work carried out by Percy Johnson-Marshall & Partners during the mid-1990s has brought the capacity to over 60,000. This aerial view shows the Main Stand, which had 8,000 seats, and 'the Jungle' (top left), which had 4,500 seats. The Eastern Necropolis is behind 'the Jungle' which is now known as the North Stand and seats 28,244. The Main Stand has become the South Stand and seats 13,675, while the Jock Stein Stand (left) has 9,363 and the Lisbon Lions Stand (right) accommodates 9,073, making a total of 60,355. On 28 May 1888 Celtic beat Rangers 5-2 in a 'friendly'. It was the new Club's first match and was played on the first Celtic Park. In 1889 Celtic reached the final of the Scottish Cup in their first full season of competition, but they lost 2-1 to the well-established Third Lanark. However, the Club won its first trophy, the North-Eastern Cup (a local competition), beating Cowlairs 6-1 in the final. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
