Scope and Content Skares Brick Works, Skares, East Ayrshire, looking north-west Skares Brick Works were built by the National Coal Board in 1954-5, just north of Whitehill Colliery, and opened in 1957. In 1969 the works were taken over by the Scottish Brick Corporation. The works shut down in 1987. This is a general view of the brick works from the top of the colliery bing (waste heap) looking north-west. This view shows the raw material hoppers on the far right linked to the machine wing by a conveyor. On the right is the long, 28-chamber kiln where the bricks were fired. Around the mid-1980s the brick industry blossomed, largely due to a boom in the English construction industry, and from new standards of building insulation which could most easily be attained by using bricks. About 20 brick works were operating in Scotland prior to the 1990 economic recession which led to a downturn in the building industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
