Scope and Content Stall in calf byre, Quivals Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands The house at Quivals was originally built as the island's school perhaps in the late 18th century. The steading with its 40 acres of arable land and 10 of grazing was for the use of the school and school master. This shows a detail of a stall in the calf byre which adjoins the threshing barn. This is one of three small stalls with flagstone trevises (partitions) and feeding troughs on the east wall. The space was last used to house pigs. The walls are constructed of rubble masonry and the building has a single-pitched corrugated sheet metal roof. By the 17th century Sanday was paying more scat (tax) than the other Orkney Islands, and so may have contained more arable land than the other islands. By 1996, like the rest of Orkney, Sanday concentrated on beef production. Other aspects of the economy at this time included fishing, knitwear and a small electronics factory.
