Scope and Content Byre, Quivals Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-east The house at Quivals was originally built as the island's school perhaps in the late 18th century. The steading with its 40 acres of arable land and 10 of grazing was for the use of the school and school master. This shows the byre from the south-east with its rubble masonry walls, concrete floor and flagstone roof on A-framed wooden couples. In the foreground is the midden with its concrete base. This area was also used as a cattle court in conjunction with a 'self-feed' arrangement installed in the byre. By the 17th century Sanday was paying more scat (tax) than the other Orkney Islands, and so may have contained more arable land than the other islands. By 1996, like the rest of Orkney, Sanday concentrated on beef production. Other aspects of the economy at this time included fishing, knitwear and a small electronics factory.
