Scope and Content Aerial view of Ibrox Stadium, Nos 100-70 Edmiston Drive, Glasgow Glasgow Rangers Football Club started in 1872 with two brothers, Peter and Moses McNeil, and two friends, Peter Campbell and William McBeath. who called the Club 'Argyle'. The Club moved to Ibrox in 1887 and the Main Stand, a listed building, dates from 1928. This is an aerial view of Ibrox Football Stadium, the home ground of Rangers FC. The main entrance and stand, at the bottom of the picture, was the pinnacle of Archibald Leitch's (1866-1939) career as a leading designer of football grounds. The picture shows part of the district of Govan, where Ibrox is situated, on the banks of the River Clyde, a place once famed for shipbuilding. When the Main Stand was opened in 1929, it was the largest (10,000 seats) and most lavish stand ever built. The name 'Rangers' apparently came from an English rugby club. Prior to Ibrox, the Club was based at Fleshers Haugh, Glasgow Green (1873-5); Burnbank, Great Western Road (1875-6); and Kinning Park (1876-7). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
